But are we prepared to win, or are we practicing surrender? We have foiled dozens of terrorist attacks since then. But while the Fort Dix terrorists were stopped, an Islamist terrorist at Fort Hood unleashed hell on American servicemen. Despite Maj. Nidal Hasan’s shouting “Allahu Akbar” as he pulled the trigger, the official Pentagon report refused to mention Islam or use the word Muslim. And said the army chief of staff, “As horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that's worse.” As William J. Bennett and Seth Leibsohn show, for lack of clarity, conviction, and determination, America is on the verge of declaring preemptive cultural surrender in the war on terror. Though not every book in the Bible is referenced, the idea is implied that the author is attempting to span the entire Bible starting at Genesis and ending with Revelation. Each daily devotion also includes a few points to reflect upon as well as a written prayer relating to that day’s theme.

In my opinion, I have certainly read better devotionals. The ideas related in each chapter are similar enough to make some chapters fairly redundant. The themes Crabb focuses on are certainly Biblical, but in a writing that almost spans the entire Bible, there are so many more points not brought into focus. I actually found the writing in the majority of the chapters to be somewhat discouraging. With a common, though superficial, criticism of Christianity being that the Bible can be depressing, Crabb’s devotionals could be more beneficial by bringing out a variety of themes in the Bible, especially the joyful life of freedom we as Christians can live in Christ.

SURVIVING THE SERENGETI

I have enjoyed this book. Although thoroughly researched, Turner has a habit of giving a few more details than necessary. Over time this tends to bog a reader down with names, dates and places that don’t exactly enhance the men’s stories. That being said, this book was fascinating. It reminds us that the Titanic passengers had normal lives just like us, and the trip to America was just a tiny bit of it. It really is a beautiful insight into the world of the turn of the century. People’s mindsets, dreams, troubles, and expectations are so foreign yet so charming. I loved being in that.I feel the story of the Titanic is more personal now knowing them better. But Turner wonderfully blended in details of the ship and time. Coal strikes, other shipwrecks, law changes, publicity cravings, and unusual weather all played a part in the death of the luxury liner. It is a wonderful book!

WE BE BIG By Rick Burgess and Bill Bussey with Don Keith

The story of two unlikely radio hosts and what happened when they followed their faith and instincts.

I've read Rick and Bubba's Big Book of Grub before, and I absolutely loved it! Soon Chase, Porta, Promise and several other interesting characters are thrown into a confrontation of finding hope and faith.

It seems that the author tried to include suspense and twists, but it didn't work...at least, not for me. It was predictable, and the ending, which I will not spoil, was only mediocre. All the characters were shallow and clearly defined (in a bad way). This means that there was no blurred line between good or bad, and such is one flaw that makes this book at the reading level of a sixth grader.

The author seemed to be trying to share that eternal love, not life, may be the greatest gift of all. Cheesy and cliché. I've read his previous books, What's in A Word and Why We Say What We Say, and I totally loved them, so I am happy to report that Curiosities of the Civil War is also a stupendous read.

Instead of offering another look at the most significant military and political events, Curiosities of the Civil War focuses on relatively unknown and obscure aspects of the war.

It is estimated that 623,000 soldiers died during the Civil War. If the June 1865 surrender of Kirby-Smith’s forces is taken as the last hurrah of the Confederacy, then the war lasted almost fifty months. Fighting took place on each of the war’s approximately 1,396 days from 1861 to 1865; as tabulated by Frederick H. Dyer, 10,455 military “events” took place during the war. Millions of men and thousands of encounters produced a multitude of extraordinary things.

I would recommend this book to everyone!

REGRET-FREE PARENTING By Catherine Hickems

Wow, I'd sure like to confidently raise my children! I was more than excited to read her thoughts. Even though there is a fair amount of God in it, -sigh-, it is not like everything is about him and all that he does for us, yada yada, it is definitely not a preachy book, and this is why I didn't hate it from Page 1.

This book takes you on a walk through the man’s subconscious as a boy to the grown men we know. Excuse my thinking that it was her who penned this series. Upon opening this book, I almost knew that Ms Tickle was not going to be able to amaze me, given her past history in her books, but I was hoping for a spark. It is Christmas, after all. If her book was to be the spark that saved my life, I'd be 6 feet under right about now, and I promise you, I already have a one way ticket to hell. It was not exciting in the least, with droning parts that lasted way too long, and resembled a priest's Sunday school class way too much. When Ms Tickle wrote that Sabbath was not an option, it is a commandment, I felt like Santa's enslaved reindeer. All I want to do is graze and watch some Charlie Brown Christmas, and you want me to pull a fictional, but insanely heavy sleigh all night? No thank you, sir. To a large extent, this book just contains the author's opinions and personal views. I guess it never crossed her mind that we might not share those views. I feel like Meursault from The Outsider, when the judge tries to convert him, and all he can do is smile and nod. There are no credible sources to back up the author's views, and if I were to say that there is a tiny teapot floating between Saturn and Uranus, who would be able to deny it? Granted, you can't prove that it is there, but you can't prove that it isn't, either. I wanted to actually learn from this book, not be preached to by it. I guess there will be no net gain of knowledge today; only a loss of brain cells at the ignorance of our authors today.

THE SACRED JOURNEY By Phyllis Tickle

Ah Ms Tickle, you really have written a set of beautifully worded books, none of which suit my liking, but I'm sure please countless people worldwide. So please excuse me if this review doesn't make you gush butterflies and crocoducks. My apologies if I accidentally write something that offends, and I will graciously accept yours if you offend me, as you often do with your biased language and unconcerning tone. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed your pre-warning! You wrote to me, sincerely, that every person who reads this book will disagree with at least something. Well, you have me pinned down perfectly, Ms Tickle. Not only do I completely disagree with your reasoning, use of literary devices (who are we kidding, your misuse of them), and your droning pastor tone which almost lulled me to sleep faster than the subway did, telling me to follow Jesus had me laughing hysterically, which gained me the curious looks of many a passenger. Forgive me, I haven't taken any hallucinogenic drugs since the 80s, and even then I was a prudish one to be reckoned with. This book isn't so much a how-to book as much as it is a warning to the coming pilgrimage. A journey to a higher state of morality. Well, when the sun decides to run out of hydrogen, expand to nearly a thousand times its current size, engulfing half our solar system and extinguishing the human race and every clue of our existence, don't blame it on God. I can assure you, I won't either.

TITHING By Phyllis Tickle

Before opening this book, I had to scuttle onto Wikipedia and search up "tithing". Yup. So this book talks about ten people and their decision to tithe. Should that be pronounced [tith]? or [tythe]? You understand. Apparently, tithing has had a veritable impact on their lives. Perhaps one less drink at the bar, one less $5 bill in their wallet, one more hand reaching into their pocket during the season. Good thing is, this book suggest contemporary applications to tithing. Perhaps saving that african child by donating directly is better than giving it to the church who will take a portion, give it to the government, who will take a portion, give it to aid organizations, who will take a portion, and finally throw a few pennies at those children in underdevelopped Africa. At least the stories are told without much bias. Not a great book, not a spectacular book, wouldn't recommend it unless you are stuck on a 16 hours trans-atlantic flight inbetween a snoring overweight man and his child with nothing better to do this Christmas. Maybe you'll make a new friend.

THE SACRED MEAL By Phyllis Tickle

A sacred meal. The sacred meal? Wow. Undeserving overexaggeration. In any case, let's not let that ruin the pretense of this book. (Too late). This book talks about how we do not fully appreciate the Lord's Supper. We are forgetting his ways! We are sinners! Once again, an exaggeration. I don't follow the old Testament to a tee (imagine me murdering my own child and claiming it was done in God's name), so perhaps the practices of communion mustn't be as harsh and strict. Nevertheless, this book also talks about sharing joy and triumph, sombre and sadness, with friends, to develop connections over a cup of spiked eggnog. That last part is my holiday tradition, and it hasn't changed for quite some time. Easy to read, easy to understand, almost to the point of boredom. I love analogies, metaphors, allusions! Give me SOMETHING please! A flat book, but insightful enough for your pastor friend. I suppose my copy will be going into the church donation bin this Christmas.

LIES THE GOVERNMENT TOLD YOU By Andrew Napolitano

Are you curious about the things you hear from your government? Has America been lied to? Darling, wouldn't you just love to know. This book is written by what I think is a credible judge. Andrew Napolitano, whose name doesn't remind me at all of ice cream, takes us through a journey filled with deceit and cover-up. I thought he did a real nice job at staying unbiased, which might explain his high standing position as a judge, but nevertheless, he throughly inspects, critiques, and takes on some tough and controversial topics with brilliance and a genuine comfort. I enjoyed this book. It is not hard to understand, and quite easy to become enthralled and fascinated. Given a chance to dig a little deeper into the American constitution and to read about the vast ocean of things we, as inhabitants, were kept from, almost stuns you in its entirety. The author truly has a passion for what he does, and he writes with an exquisitely intricate, but at the same time, forceful style, which let me pay close attention to the message he is really trying to convey about the state of the American government. This book is a must read for everyone. Perfect score, and perfect for the season! 5/5.

SEEDS OF TURMOIL By Bryan Wright

So I have been approached by some readers about the purpose of this blog. I love to write, and I used to be a Christian. Now a 180 degree atheist, I haven't lost my love of literature, and I want to express myself and my opinions in the most open way possible.

In any case, the book on the hot seat today is Seeds of Turmoil by Bryan Wright. It starts off with a retelling of the bible. I wonder if the author should assume that someone reading this book would already be familiar with the bible? The second part is focused on Islam and its origin, history, the like. The author is frighteningly biased, and he himself states that. Does that lend any credibility to his book? Not at all.

I must add, however, that it was a good read. Even if I don't follow his ideals and beliefs, I enjoyed reading his writing. It is stunningly and beautifully persuasive. I suppose this reflects his entire religion. He states that there will be no peace until everyone submits to their ideology, they being Muslims. Wait, who is that knocking on my door offering me a complimentary bible if I go to their bible study session to revel in the splendor of Jesus and to repent for my "sins"? It's been a while, actually, a lifetime, since that person was a Muslim.

The author even dares to compare other cultures, namely, Islam, to Nazis and Marxists and I quote "...persuading people through power, force, intimidation, and fear." What on earth have they done to deserve this treatment other than worship their idea of god in their own fashion? When has the church, oh heck, Christianity, as a whole, done anything through love and persuasion? Fine, I'll give them the persuasion bit. Roger Bacon (who is a real person, by the way) would be on my side. Google him, he is an amazing person and a hero of mine.

The author then has the audacity to threaten me, outrightly contradicting his previous clause about using love and whatnot. Wright needs to open his eyes. Wider. Wider. Close enough. Anyway, this is going on way too long. I must cut it short, and I will do so by not recommending this book. Notice how I didn't say "throw it on the fire"? Non-Christian writings were destroyed all for the simple reason of non-conformity.

I will simply say that this book is nothing but a completely biased retelling of the story of two different cultures, one made out to be a horrid group of tyrants, and the other its polar opposite. If you wish to continue to let this author lead you down his path, continue on. If you wish to be able to express your thoughts without the fear of abolition, walk past this book without a passing glance. Not even a sneaky one.

THEN SINGS MY SOUL By Robert Morgan

An absolutely darling compilation of various famous hymns common to Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and the like. See, I can be a nice blogger. Not only do you get the sheet music for each hymn, you get a little story behind it too! I really enjoyed that. I am exposed to more contemporary Christian music, and this really opens up your eyes to the more traditional aspect of this religion. Worship? I didn't even get married in a church! Don't talk to me about worship, but you can talk to me about music. I love it. My life revolves around music. The humming never stops! I almost got kicked out of an exam because I couldn't stop humming "Jingle Bells". Even though it is nice to have the sheet music for each hymn neatly printed in order, it is unpleasant to have to read "GOD IS REAL, SO SCREW THOSE OTHER RELIGIONS; THEY ARE ALL WRONG" between the lines. Music is an art, not a medium through which the existence, or lack thereof, of God should be forced upon music lovers like myself. Thumbs in the middle. Loved the idea of the book, adored the little stories, abhorred the inflexibility of religion that is so widespread in this book. There, a partially nice review.

THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER By Andrew Klavan

If it is a relaxing, subtle book you seek, turn back now. There is no escape from the dribbling vortex of hormone-ridden males, the targeted audience for this book. It seems as though the author never matured. His book is simply dedicated to boys who enjoy endless hours of Wii and pushing things to their extremes. That is not to say I didn't like this book. However, I did not love it. It is unworthy and did not earn its place next to Pride and Prejudice. Pushing things to their extremes seemed to be the author's goal. There is never-ending tension, which is contrasted by...more tension, action, edginess, and drama. The poor characters; always with an enemy trailing not far behind. It is very compelling, though. A good read, but nothing drastic. Charlie, our hero, appears to be one of those Jehovah's Witnesses that badger us at ungodly hours in the morning in disguise as a young teenager. Stop preaching to me! I get it, you're Christian, now stop shoving Him down my throat! (I support that sexual connotation 100%) Anyway, back to subject matter. A good read. Nothing special. Skip it you must. Try Harry Potter. It offers all the action without the not-so-subtle hints at God.

JUNGLE WARFARE By Christopher Cunningham

Jungle warfare. Now what does that sound like to you? Definitely not a field guide for Christians in sales. How are Christians in sales different from atheists in sales? No clue. It seems like writers these days have to try less and less; there's just not as much effort involved in the creation of literary genius.
Publisher: "What's your book about?"
Aspiring writer: "Um, I haven't decided, but it will definitely be about Christianity."
Publisher: "Sold. It will be a bestseller."
I have to admit, though, the premise of the book intrigued me. A guide made SOLELY for Christians in sales. Anyway, apparently, the author decided to take his grandfather's Jungle Warfare manual and convert it to a delectable mishmash of business ideals and religious ideals. Dégueulasse. Obviously, we keep our wits about us, know thine enemy, serve your leader, push through difficulties, the list goes on and whatnot. Bor-ing. I give this book a big thumbs down. I like to read about war, trench life, strategic planning, the like. I also like to read about successful businessmen and their rise to fame. However, their lovechild was a horrid experience. Not recommended at all. Even though I am not American, and certainly will not be in the near future, I am able to enjoy this book without worrying about Stephen Harper peering over my shoulder. In any case, it clearly describes all the conflicts, discoveries, ideas, and pride of everyday life in such a developed country. Retelling all the major historical events that shaped the US that we know today. William Bennett is a story master. He tells these events with such fervent enthusiasm that it absolutely contagious! It grasps the big themes and minute details and made me a fan of history in all its forms. My daughter reads it and really wants to be like the main character. The plot is...nonexistent, but it is a children's picture book, so let's leave it at that. The drawings are adorable and beautiful, and the idea of talking animals just excited my daughter to no end. She really enjoyed it, however, I did not like that Christianity was shoved down my throat, quite unwillingly, actually. As a children's book, shouldn't we be encouraging them to develop their own beliefs about religion, instead of forcing the notion of God into their trusting and believing minds? The magical aspect of this novel, as well as the good lesson learned, is to be credited, but it was see through, even for a 7 year old, and she revealed the ending long before her fingers reached it. Would I recommend it? As a children's book, not one bit. It leaves no room for imagination or personal beliefs, but as a pretty book of pictures, it does the job.

YOU CHANGED MY LIFE By Max Lucado

This book may really have changed my life. Perhaps. Well, I should hope so. It's a collection of stories from people whose lives have been irreplaceably changed by something or someone. I really liked this book, since it is a good read and it is thought provoking at the same time. I really enjoyed being inspired by all the stories in this book and I think that this really pushes people (or at least me) to be a better person, to be the change in another person's life, or to do something positive to make my life better. I really liked the testimonies because it reminds me that these are real people! I read this book on the way to work, at at work too, but don't tell my boss! It was that good. I would highly recommend this to everyone!

THE FALLING AWAY By T.L.Hines

I recently received this book for review, and I think…hmm, what do I think about it? It was a good read, although I expected nothing short of literary brilliance, so I must say, a little disappointing. However, The Falling Away is one of those mystery books that I would like to have on my shelf, not as a well-loved, dog-eared book, but as something of a filler. I can’t have my bookshelf looking empty and lopsided, now, can I? Dylan, a native, runs away from his reservation. That’s the beginning? Cliché much? Ignore, let’s keep going. He runs away to the army. Oh dear gosh. Then his leg gets mangled and his friend gets killed. And he tries to run away from his life, but then he meets Quinn, who claims to see things not seen by others. Weird. And overrated. Unique, not so much, but a good read, I’ll give it that. I would read this for the same reason thousands of women read trashy magazines about celebrities and their good sex – hopeless, unadulterated boredom. That and as a distraction from the plate of spicy Texas chicken wings calling to me from the kitchen.

SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME by Ron Hall and Denver Moore

This is truly a great read that captivated me for the bus ride to class and back! It is about a boy named Denver who escaped slavery on a train and learns to trust a white man. There is another story woven intricately into the book about Deborah who discovers she has cancer. Linked by Deborah’s husband, both Deborah and Denver leap across the barriers of society to form a delicate and thought-provoking read. I really did like this book, despite the very unsubtle references to God. I am already Christian, but I do not need Him shoved down my throat. I dislike books that are overtly Christian, because they tend to put me off, coming off as exclusive and haughty. Anyway, despite all that, I did enjoy the storyline, with its twists and turns, the writing style was sassy and sweet, and let’s not forgets the final triumphant ending that I will not soon forget.

A TIME TO DANCE by Karen Kingsbury

Alright! A new book! I think this book, A Time to Dance, by Karen Kingsbury, is from the Timeless Love collection, which has three books, all about the same people and their lives, and I think that this book is beautifully scripted, with lots and lots of exciting and romantic moments that made me swoon. So here is the short plot: A couple decides to divorce, but their daughter is getting married (got to love the irony there), so the couple decide to postpone their divorce. But as the wedding nears, the couple decide to try again with each other to reclaim their former happiness through…dance? Anyway, I really liked it, it was well-written, and it is a good read, especially for those 20 minutes before going to bed, I think. Not terrible exciting, but a good little thing to have.

FTC: I was provided with this book for review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions expressed are my own, and I was not paid to write this review.

HAND OF FATE by Lis Whiehl and April Henry

This is the second book in the series featuring three sassy, sexy, amazing female crime fighters. When someone was murdered, the three ladies try to solve his murder and try to piece together his death and uncover the truth. Since this is a mystery novel, I don’t want to ruin the ending for anyone. This is a great read, and I highly recommend it, because it is suspenseful, captivating, and definitely not just a subway ride to work read. I stayed up all night to read it, and could not stop turning the pages! I love the female empowerment, and this entire book kept me on alert for hours on end, so this is truly a good book for anyone who is looking for a thrill and a great suspenseful mystery read. Almost like a Chicken Soup book, it helps girls take a new approach to life, rather than the one most portrayed on television. I have a teenage daughter who is stressing about these things, and it really helps her deal with traumas, dramas, and triumphs in her life. I think she is better for reading it. I read it too, for the heck of it, and thought it was empowering and beautiful, just the perfect thing for a preteen or teen. These are crazy years, and girls need something to help them through. I would recommend this book to everyone with a young female in need of advice.

FTC: I was provided with this book for review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions expressed are my own, and I was not paid to write this review.

LOVE ON A DIME by Cara Lynn James

I got to review Love on A Dime, a girly, squealy, cute little book by Cara Lynn James. It is a historical fiction, set in Newport, Rhode Island in 1899, and it is just the perfect romance novel for that subway ride to work and home. It is about a young girl who write under a nom de plume, being proposed to by a dashing young man, while secretly, her heart pursues another. Oh, how adorable! She needs to protect her identity, but wants to come clean to her true love. I know this isn’t a book for all ages, and it may be a little too sweet and romantic for some, but I absolutely loved it. The plot wasn’t spectacular, the characters weren’t deep, and imagery was only mediocre, at best, but the way reading this book makes your heart thud with emotion is amazing. I would recommend this book to everyone who wants a quick sweet read.

FTC: I was provided with this book for review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions expressed are my own, and I was not paid to write this review.

I AM HUTTERITE by Mary-Ann Kirkby

When I first got a hold of this book, I thought, BORING! I usually head for the colourful book covers, but I told myself, at least try reading it, so I did. This is a self-published memoir that talks about Mary-Ann Kirkby’s life on the Fairholme Hutterite colony, and when she and her family left this lifestyle. The courtship and marriage of Kirkby’s parents are described in great detail, as is the birth of their children, but really what I loved, was the feeling that went into it, and the fascinating look at different perspectives about this lifestyle. I found this book absolutely captivating. It tugged at my heart strings at times, and made me soar for joy at others. The obstacles and triumphs that this family, and their little girl of 10 then 18, had to go through were absolutely breathtaking. Penned with an elegant and beautiful writing style, this is a book I’d recommend to anyone.

FTC: I was provided with this book for review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions expressed are my own, and I was not paid to write this review

WONDERS NEVER CEASE by Tim Downs

I was recently lucky enough to review the fabulous book Wonders Never Cease by Tim Downs, and I really did love it. It was a hilarious book about a nurse who adjusts the medication of a comatose movie star in order to pretend to be giving her messages. He ensures that these messages will become the next spiritual best seller, followed by a lifetime of riches for them all. However, plot twist, his girlfriend’s daughter keeps telling people that she is seeing angels, and her mother and her teachers are all afraid that something is wrong. What a charming book! It kept me captivated throughout and I absolutely adored all the characters and all the growth they underwent by the end of the novel. It was a real page turner, and I fell deep into the story. The plot and characters were all unique and different, and the Christian element was understated and elegant in itself. A book about love, faith, greed, and justice, it’s definitely one for the ages, at least, my ages. An interesting book, yes, but captivating? Not so much. The plot is intriguing, at best. A woman, Gracie, I’ll call her, runs away from her family, taking her daughter with her, runs away and starts a new life. Don’t all soap operas begin this way? A single mom struggling to feed her waif-thin daughter and herself, suddenly falling in love, and all seems to be well until her past catches up with her. Bor-ring. I’m not going to spoil the few plot points and ideas here, so I’ll keep it short and simple. This is a very Christianized book. I am Christian, but I don’t always need to have God shoved down my throat. The characters don’t seem to have thoughts of their own and the plot was predictable. The imagery and description, I did like. It was very well written, but none of the characters, especially the main one, Gracie, seem to have been developed, or even change throughout the story. Inspiring? Not one bit. A good read for the bus ride to work? Sure. So would I recommend this book? Yes, but don’t expect anything spectacular.

FTC: I was provided with this book for review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions expressed are my own, and I was not paid to write this review.

RICK AND BUBBA’S BIG HONKIN’ BOOK OF GRUB by Bill Bussey and Rick Burgess

When I first saw this book, wonderfully titled Rick and Bubba’s Big Honkin’ Book of Grub, I thought that it was a wonderful, fatty filled, deliciously greasy book of recipes, but as soon as I flipped it open, half expecting to start slobbering over pictures of cheeseburgers and hams, all I saw were words. There wasn’t even any color pictures. Just plain black on white. A bit taken back, I decided to start reading anyway, and it isn’t so bad! These two men are hilarious and write in an easy to understand way that I like. There are some recipes included, but that is definitely not the main focus of the book. There are funny anecdotes, random trivia, and just plain useless information that made me laugh for hours on end. It was absolutely great! I was captivated, and loved reading this book. A plus: the words are of a large font! I can read this even when I’m on the train without too much strain on the eyes. So would I recommend this? Definitely, because it’s such a good book without being too mundane, like most recipe books get.

FTC: I was provided with this book for review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions expressed are my own, and I was not paid to write this review.

WHAT’S IN A WORD by Webb Garrison

I’ve always wondered where some of the words we say come from, and never found the time to search it up online, and asking my friends usually leads nowhere. This is why the book What’s In A Word by Webb Garrison is such an eye-opener for me. This is a fantastic non-fiction book that isn’t heavy like a dictionary, and has an attractive cover to boot. It’s all about the origins of every word that we use on a daily basis, and it’s a wonder that no one has ever thought about their past and beginnings. I loved it! This satisfied all my curiosities, and I love that I now know so much more about our language and how it came to be. It isn’t hard to read either, and the language is appropriate for all audiences, plus, there are cute and funny pictures! It’s a great book for both adults and interested teens. I found it fascinating, and I read it from beginning to end with great rapture. So what’s the final verdict? I would recommend this book to everyone who wants to learn a little more, or is just bored and has nothing to read, because this is a fabulous book.

FTC: I was provided with this book for review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions expressed are my own, and I was not paid to write this review.

Review: THE CLOUDS ROLL AWAY by Sibella Giorello

This is the second Raleigh Harmon book by the same author, and it is a beautifully composed mystery novel that is perfect for all hours of the day. The story takes us to Virginia, where a forensic geologist, after returning to her hometown, is immediately dragged into a case investigating a cross burning at a celebrity’s mansion. To add more stress to her life, Raleigh’s personal life is almost as murky as her case, with her mother, boyfriend, and boss complicating all aspects of her life. As the book progresses, Raleigh uncovers more and more secrets and details about her case, and left me captivated and amazed at the quality of writing. I loved Giorello’s usage of language and imagery to turn this mystery novel into a suspenseful thriller that I could not stop reading. The characters are all well developed and all have their own secrets and depth, which just made it all the more interesting to read. Unlike some other forensic books, the technology and details involved with the case were not too fantasy or sci-fi like, which made the entire story more believable and easy to relate to. One slight annoyance that I have is the incorporation of God into the story. I am a devout Christian, but sometimes, I just want to read a nice story without having to be overwhelmed by religious references and elements. Other than that, I would say this book is honestly a great read, and I definitely will be keeping an eye out for Giorello’s other creations in the future.

FTC: I was provided with this book for review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions expressed are my own, and I was not paid to write this review.

Review: NCV REVOLVE NEW TESTAMENT BIBLEZINE 2010

This is a new concept to me, a biblezine? What on earth is that? A Bible/magazine hybrid? That’s exactly what Revolve 2010 is. It is a thick magazine that reads like a book, so it really attracted my attention. This is obviously geared toward young girls, looking at the “Guy 411” and “Are you a Talkaholic?” titles screaming from the page, and I get it. They are trying to make the Bible more accessible and interesting to teenage girls, but does it compromise the beauty of the Bible? In some aspects, I can relate to this biblezine, but in others, I end up with negative feelings. But let’s start with the good. The way this is set up is really interesting, as they tried to copy the magazine format, and I think that my teenage daughter won’t feel like a loser when she pulls this out to read, and the passages have been translated to a more easier to understand format, the New Century Version, which is again, good, for teenagers. It was very easy to read, and the array of colors can draw attention to the important parts of this Bible, and there are little stories that are cute and funny to read, and I think that this is relevant to teenagers today. However, I didn’t like that the verses from Psalms were converted to crazy text messages that are difficult to understand and truly appreciate, and the Bible characters are introduced with Facebook. Facebook profiles, really? I may not have liked that, but it could have made them more relatable to teenagers, and if so, that’s great, but for me, I wouldn’t recommend this biblezine. It undermines the true beauty of the Bible, just to make it more appealing to girls. Personally, I didn’t like it, but I would pass this on to a friend, in the hopes that it helps other girls become interested in God and the Bible.

FTC: I was provided with this book for review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions expressed are my own, and I was not paid to write this review.
